Remuneration Group 13 | Limited: 3 years | Starting date: 01.10.2023 | ID: MPO004/2023 | Deadline: 08.07.2023 | Full-time/Part-time | Remote work possible

DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

Particle accelerators based on novel plasma technology are promising to positively disrupt a multitude of accelerator-based applications in the health sector, industry, and fundamental research. Given their high-potential for impact in society at-large, plasma accelerators form a cornerstone of the DESY accelerator research and development strategy. This advanced accelerator concept leverages extreme fields in the GV/m-range, which exceed those achievable with traditional radiofrequency accelerators by orders of magnitude. As a consequence, plasma-based particle accelerators are the key to the miniaturization of today's large-scale accelerator installations and to the future deployment of compact, mobile systems. DESY advances all facets of beam- and laser-driven plasma accelerators with a focus on programmatic R&D toward high-average-power, stable beams and developing frontier technologies to deliver on the potential of plasma-based particle acceleration. The theory and simulation team of the plasma acceleration group MPA at DESY develops and harnesses simulation tools to help understand experiments, propose novel concepts and investigate new mechanisms, key ingredients for plasma-based acceleration research. The postdoc will participate in the development of the open-source, GPU-capable simulation code HiPACE++ (written in C++ using modern high-performance computing - HPC - methods) and use it, in combination with other popular tools in the community, to propose solutions on various aspects of plasma-based acceleration research in a range of parameters relevant for a plasma-based collider including positron acceleration.

About your role:

  • The applicant will have a dual code development and physics theory focus, with approximately equal share
  • Active participation in the development of the simulation code for plasma acceleration HiPACE++, developed at DESY, will represent one of the main focuses
  • Contributions will cover performance optimization, improvement of numerical methods, addition of new features and implementation of additional physics effects
  • The applicant will run HiPACE++ on world-class supercomputers to numerically and theoretically investigate different aspects of plasma acceleration towards high-efficiency, high-repetition-rate, multi-stage accelerators of positrons and electrons relevant for high-energy-physics applications and others
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work. You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.

About you:

  • PhD in physics or equivalent, with a focus on plasma acceleration, in particular in the stable acceleration of high-energy high-quality positron beams
  • Solid knowledge of applicable modern programming techniques (C++, git, Python, bash, GPU computing, Jupyter) as well as usage of supercomputers
  • Experience in collaborating with experimental programs to support understanding and planning
  • Self-motivated with a strong desire to drive central aspects of your work forward independently
  • Outstanding team-work and inter-personal communication skills
  • Technology-transfer-focused mindset
